Small Town Big Money Entrepreneurship and Opportunity in Today Small Town Colby Williams 9781732781023 Books Reviews

  • Colby Williams not only produced a work of easy-to-apply wisdom regarding small town entrepreneurship, business start up, and venture lessons (often learned the hard way), he elaborately illustrates the beauty — and hilarity — of doing this in small town America. It encompasses a deep connection to community, local business owners/investors, and the relationships that ultimately lead to impact and progress. Strategically capitalizing on the business opportunity of small towns, he warmly invites you to do the same!
  • Colby brings personal, energetic and practical experiences with this book. Helping those just starting in the entrepreneur world, whether they are from the big city or small middle of nowhere town.
  • Love his writing style! Lots of good insights and stories. A must read for the small town business person!
  • Funny. Creative. Inquisitive. Enlightening.
  • If memory serves me right, I visited Parengo on the day of its soft opening in the original location. I moved to this small town almost 14 years ago from a city where good coffee was a readily available commodity. When Parengo opened, I was thrilled to find a welcome atmosphere (truly, so welcoming all the time!) with coffee that didn't remind me even a little bit of Folgers. Since that first day, I've been a regular customer. I wrote about half of my first book at Parengo, and I can't hazard a guess at how many cups of coffee I've consumed.

If this sounds like a review of Parengo, Colby's coffee shop, that's because it sort of is. What I want to communicate is that Colby's book is an accurate reflection of what he has done in the formerly failing historical district of our small town in Missouri. From where I sit, which is often at the table nearest the espresso machine, Parengo is the heart of our downtown. I am not sure the district would have reawakened quite so well if not for Colby's vision for Parengo in this exact location. You can trust his wisdom in entrepreneurism because his fellow Sikestonians can attest to his success.
"Small Town Big Money" was a fun and educational read. I enjoyed the personal stories woven throughout, and I even learned what "scalability" is. I'm not an entrepreneur, but I am a writer, and there are some principles for branding and getting your work in front of your ideal readers (or consumers) that apply. So, for you entrepreneurs and small business owners, you'll find lots of encouragement and uncomplicated tried-and-true advice.
  • entrepreneurship is such a buzzword these days...it feels like building a business and how to make money is the only thing people want to talk about anymore. but what's super frustrating is that all talk about money feels like it's coming from someone in NYC or Silicon Valley - and sure, a lot of business principals are not location dependent, i get that, but what about all the stuff that IS? It is so freakin' nice to finally hear a voice that felt like it was actually speaking in a language that is super relevant TO ME!

Like i'll be honest, i didn't even know how to write a business plan. I've never thought about how to organize an elevator pitch. Until I read this book I did not know that "pitch competitions" were even a thing. I didn't know that. Did you? Am i on an island?

He's also pretty straight forward about the amount work it takes, both mentally and physically, which i respond to. I'm not a hope real big, and wish real hard, and all your dreams will come true kinda gal, so i like that he didn't sugar coat anything. Like dude, if you want to run a business that actually makes you big time money, you gotta put in big time work. and he's generously laid out a really solid framework for exactly how to do that so you're not just chasing your tail for no reason. This book is freakin' solid, man. If you're looking for more than just rainbows and pats on the back, because you actually want to learn about ways to generate more revenue and all of the places you should be looking in a small town to make that happen...he's spelled it out for you. I would have never thought of half of his suggestions.

Plus it's funny. I kind of want him to just write a book about his life, now, because he makes small town living feel like a movie.
  • Small Town Big Money is an entertaining, easy read with valuable information for entrepreneurs, business owners, or anyone interested in small town success. Colby Williams shares from experience and explores potential and pitfalls of those willing to take the steps toward creating their own future. Vision, debt, scalability, business plans, and the optimism bias are all explained in thought provoking, often humorous stories.

I can see a great need for this information to be shared in today's hyper-connected gig economy which opens the whole world to those with ideas and the drive to truly be or do anything they would like to pursue. "Successful people look at the world and see what could be. They remain a few steps ahead of the masses, inventing solutions before most people know they have a problem."

Even though I am a pretty traditional boomer nearing retirement, the book gave me much to consider as I contemplate an encore career or chasing a dream. Most of my life has been spent in small towns and I can relate to many of opportunities, challenges attitudes and cliches, mentioned in the book. Colby is spot on with his analysis.

Definitely not a stuffy business book, Small Town Big Money overflows with valuable resources for today's business people. "If well-intentioned warnings are food for thought, then small-town entrepreneurs should prepare for an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord."
