- I went to a store and looked at all of the new Rand McNally Atlases, along with a few other brands. This one was the best, at least for me. As some have commented, it is really big. The upside is that there is a lot of detail and it is actually not that thick or heavy. The small ones did not have enough detail to make them worthwhile. The spiral ones seem like a good idea, but it is tough to match up different pages and it often seems like there are small gaps in the maps on different pages. With this one it is easier to follow a map from one page to the next. This is big and can be a bit awkward in a car, but it is one of the best atlases out there.
- My wife wanted a new Rand McNally atlas while we were on a road trip. We went to several supermarkets and pharmacies in the southeast but no one had one. Some of the clerks looked at us funny and replied, "What's an atlas?". Other responses when they saw we both had large screen smart phones in our hands were "you can use your phone!". (Yeah thanks...I am a programmer and have developed smart phone apps.)
My wife ended up using the old atlas on the trip (a few highways in NC that were recently expanded were not on the old one).
When we returned home, we ordered this atlas on . We also saw this same atlas at Wegmans and Barnes and Noble.
Our car has a GPS and as I said above, my wife and I both have smartphones. I use my phone or the car GPS because it's instantly updated by Google or Apple via the cloud. My wife is old school and likes paper. Paper is not updated which is a great sales model for Rand McNally.
No little 5" phone screen to see where you are going...this sucker is 30.2" x 10.4" when opened. No scrolling around with your finger and no squinting with this atlas!
This is a nice atlas. I don't use it but my wife does and she tells me it is. Sitting in the passenger seat, she opens it up and is happy knowing where we're going. That's worth it. - This is my first Rand McNally Road Atlas since 2002. It appears that for many of the states, many of the smaller towns that once appeared on the maps in 2002, no longer do. In some cases, like the State map of CT, it is now about 50% smaller in size, thus accounting for the lack of space to show all of the towns. In this case, things are so crammed together, it is difficult to even follow hi-way routes.
However, the state of Maine's map stayed the same in size, yet towns were dropped from that map. Case in point...Unity Maine. Which is a college town!!!!
How can I show someone how to get to a certain town or city, if the map does not show it. - Just what I expected. Have purchased many Rand McNally Road Atlas maps over the years. This one comes with a transparent cover which should help to keep it in good shape for quite a while. Very satisfied
- This is a must have if you are setting out for an adventure on the road. I'm one of those people that uses my phone to get me just about anywhere I'm trying to go, but I feel MUCH more at ease with this thing on hand. The details are spectacular, the information is extremely useful and it includes a bunch of extras I wasn't even expecting - one I really like, it lists all campsites, road side parks and state park systems (with AND without campsites). It also has a great mileage chart to easily estimate travel times and a "Miles and Minutes" chart to quickly calculate distance and approximate driving times between cities.
- Not being able to obtain a paper map from gas stations we visited along our route, I ordered
the 2017 Rand McNally road atlas and couldn't be more pleased. There is more information
in the mileage section between cities than our 2006 edition. We were made fun of by our
children when we received it, but the GPS doesn't always have the correct information and
directions, so we like to rely on an actual map when things start to look fishy to us. We once
were within 2 miles of the Ole Miss campus and the GPS in my husband's Lexus took us an
hour south of the campus only to find that we were led to the Continuing Education campus
for Ole Miss in Tupelo. After that, we decided to rely on the Atlas we can read ourselves.
It comes in handy on our long road trips to see our children. - I actually held on to one of these road atlases that is well over 10 years old because it shows lesser roads more completely or accurately. In this version names of the towns and cities that are shown are larger at expense of some of the detail and town names of smaller communities that was in the earlier versions. It is also on thinner paper than the older versions and I was glad I still had the plastic cover that came with one of my old ones that stores the atlas in a loosely "single fold" vertically. That plastic cover protects it, and makes it more compact to carry in a car. (If you plan to use a road atlas like this a lot, get one that has a vinyl/plastic cover.) But, make no mistake, this atlas is no substitute for state maps that are usually free at rest areas on interstates (or welcome centers in some cities) or, can be gotten free from AAA if you're a member. This atlas is good only because each state map is more compact than the fold up state maps. It is nice to get a quick overall view of a state - but unless you plan to stay on interstate highways or main, divided highways, you can't plan trips only using this as your guide.
- I cannot say enough about this road atlas. Rand McNally says it all. It is a leader in the industry for a reasons, excellence. I received my order the very next day without paying anything extra for shipping. It is an absolute gem in planning road trips, learning about our highway/interstate system, and just general road knowledge. Worth every penny and than some!
